How to install a window treatment valance

How high do I mount my valance and how wide should it be?. The answer to these question depend on a couple things. What type of treatment if any it’s going over and how tall are you, yep your height could be a factor.

First we’ll tackle how wide

Your curtain rod should be two or three inches past your window on each side. At two inches past on each side you will probably hit wood if you use long enough screws like 1 1/2 inch. If you mount your curtain rod 3 inches or more you will miss the wood and have to use anchors.

How high should you mount your valance?

It depends if your going over a window treatment or not. If no window treatment then mount the curtain rod so the bottom of the valance is about 4 inches below the top of your opening. You don’t want to mount it so low that it covers up too much window. If you are going over a window treatment then you want to draw your treatment up so it stacks at the top. Then make it so the valance covers up the entire stack of the blind or shade. Once it’s installed when you draw the window treatment up your valance will disappear under your valance.

Now…what does your height have to do with anything.

Well it does if your installing a valance over a patio door. You don’t want your head brushing against the valance every time you walk in or out…can get annoying very quick. So just make sure the tallest person in the house will clear.
